Benefits of Conscious Humming

Humming is the simplest, most beneficial sound you can make. No training necessary, no musical knowledge, no worries about whether you can sing and in key. If you can speak, you can hum. Conscious humming has a vibrant effect on mind, body and spirit.

How does humming help? It’s comforting. It makes you calm. It lowers heart rate and blood pressure. It reduces stress. You sleep better.

What about the science? Sound creates a powerful vibratory resonance that goes into your cells and shapes, breaks or rearranges molecular structure. Humming boosts blood platelet production and the circulation of lymph. It releases endorphins which create new neural pathways; oxytocin is the ’love’ hormone, melatonin induces relaxation and nitric oxide gas widens blood vessels allowing oxygen to move more quickly into cells.

Peer-reviewed studies confirm this https://www.healingsounds.com/articles-and-interviews/

In their novel book, The Humming Effect, Johnathan and Andi Goldman introduce the…

Four Pillars of Sound Healing:

  • Everything is vibration
  • Intention is powerful – send energy to a part of the body where there is pain. Surround that area with the vibration you are creating
  • We are all unique, vibratory beings
  • Silence* is golden – positive shifts happen in the pauses between hummings

The spiritual use of humming is centuries old. Healing through sound stems from the original sound – Om, Aum, or Hum of Hindu and Tibetan traditions. It’s a humming sound you make at the start of yoga practice and meditation.

* interesting fact: ‘silent’ is an anagram of ‘listen’.

How to hum consciously:

Find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed

Check how you are feeling before you begin

Take a deep breath

Hum on one comfortable pitch until your breath runs out

Inhale again

Do this five times then pause in silence, then again, until you have completed five rounds

This should allow you 25 humming cycles-

Check how you are feeling after five minutes of this practice.

Humming benefits are cumulative. Make it a daily routine.

Cellular biologist Bruce Lipton, author of Biology of Belief, writes: Humming is a powerful non-pharmaceutical prescription for healing, harmony, health and happiness
